To ensure that each speaker can function as a matched pair, every unit is tested with an oscilloscope for flat performance, from 39Hz out to 22.5kHz +/-1.5dB. A 1 alloy dome tweeter is housed in a gently curving waveguide, enabling the monitor to provide a transparent stereo image with a large sweet spot.

The waveguide also allows the high frequency dispersion pattern to match that of the bass transducer, minimizing any audible anomalies that might otherwise occur at the crossover point. Additionally, by recessing the tweeter of the HR824 , its active area sits on the same vertical axis with the woofer providing acoustic alignment of the high and low frequencies. The visible portion of the low frequency transducer system is an 8.75 woofer with a mineral-filled cone and extra long-throw voice coil with an long peak-to-peak excursion. Like other near field monitors, the HR824 augments the bass driver output by constructively adding the woofer's back wave 180° out of phase.

However, rather than using bass ports that might induce power compression, the monitor utilizes a composite honeycomb, mass-loaded 6 x 12" elliptical passive driver that "fires out of the rear of the enclosure. The 150 watt amplifier that drives the woofer of the HR824 constantly monitors the woofers motion and applies appropriate control and damping, thereby producing tight, articulate bass. A clipping LED and a signal present/power indicator are provided on the front panel, and the monitor will accept virtually any line-level input from a mixing console. Overall speaker input gain is adjustable with a rear mounted small rotary control. True reference monitoring due to the flat frequency response provided by the active EQ, crossovers, time correction and phase alignment.
